FAFSA 2026-27 is Officially Open
Good news for families preparing for college: the 2026-27 FAFSA opened October 2nd and is running much more smoothly than previous years. After two challenging rollout years, the system appears stable with previously reported issues now resolved.
Key Changes and Reminders
Timeline Improvement: Unlike past years when FAFSA opened in January or late December, this year's early October release gives families more time to complete applications.
Tax Year: The 2026-27 FAFSA uses 2024 income tax information - not 2025. If you haven't filed your 2024 return yet, the October 15th deadline is approaching.
No Financial Documents Needed: The new FAFSA retrieves information directly from tax returns. You won't need to provide financial data separately - just confirm you filed taxes for 2024.
How the New Process Works
The current FAFSA isn't like the old linear system. Instead:
Student completes their section first
Student invites parent to participate
Parent completes their section
Application is submitted
This multi-step process can be confusing for families unfamiliar with the new system.
Non-traditional family arrangements (mixed families, multiple households, etc.) can make FAFSA completion more complicated. Honest reporting and professional guidance help ensure accuracy.
