What To Consider When Choosing Your CSU:

  1. Does the School Have Your Desired Major(s)

    • Visit the schools website to check out the selection of majors

    • Review the schools website to see if you desired major is impacted. Impacted majors will affect when you are able to get the classes you need to in order to graduate in a timely manner.

  2. How Much is Tuition?

    • Visit the CSU website to review the campus cost of attendance of all CSU’s in comparison to each other.

    • Check out the website of your desired CSU to review their campus costs (eg. Room and board, books, and misc. costs).

  3. Is your Desired CSU impacted?

    • Visit the CSU website to view impacted majors.

    • Below are current CSU campuses that are impacted, regardless of major:

      • Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

      • Fresno State

      • Cal State Fullerton

      • Cal State LA

      • Cal State Long Beach

      • San Diego State

      • San Jose State

  4. Where is it Located?

    • All 23 CSU schools are located in different environments throughout the state

    • Consider what environment you want to live in during college.

    • Consider if you want to bring a car to campus and if your CSU is easy to get around or have a more walkable community.

  5. How much diversity is on campus?

    • Consider if diversity if important to you (remember: diversity is more than ethnic background)

    • Gauge the amount of diversity on campus by researching this info on campus website but more importantly by VISITING the campuses.

    • Get a better idea of diversity by reaching out to different departments like the cross-cultural center or student organizations such as Black Student Union.

  6. Are there organizations that I’m interested in on campus?

    • Research different organizations of interest on campus, such as academic, religious, cultural, or Greek organizations.

    • Reach out to organization to join a meeting if you’re on campus during the time or join virtual events.

  7. Are there many support systems on campus for students of color and for first-generation students?

    • This could make the difference in completing your degree.

    • Apply to EOP (Educational Opportunity Program)

  8. What does the alumni network look like?

    • Sign-up for membership programs where an alumni can serve as your mentor.

    • Alumni networks are also great ways to learn about job opportunities.

    • After you graduate, you should get involved with your Alumni network.
