The 12th Grade Course Guide: Essential Classes for College-Bound Juniors

Class of 2027: Stop Taking the Wrong Classes in 12th Grade!

Is Your Student's 12th Grade Schedule Setting Them Up For College Success?

Planning the 12th grade course load is a critical step in the college admissions process. If you’re starting to look at 12th-grade course selection, it's easy to get overwhelmed.

The questions are many:
Are they taking the right core classes?
Are they taking too many electives?
Are they taking the classes that colleges actually want to see on a transcript?

A common mistake is assuming that "any" math class will satisfy requirements. This can lead students to take unnecessary courses while potentially skipping the foundational subjects colleges actually demand.

The 12th Grade class roadmap from the Education & Enrichment Program provides a clear guide on what subjects to take and when to take them to stay on the college-bound track.

The Senior Year Essentials: What Really Matters

If your 11th grader is finalizing their 12th-grade schedule, these core subjects are the non-negotiable building blocks of a strong application.

  • The Math Foundation: Students should take 4 years of math to keep all career options open.

  • The "Big Three" Requirements: The absolute minimum subjects needed are Algebra 1 (A/B), Geometry (A/B), and Algebra 2 (A/B).

  • The Algebra 2 Rule: While some schools are debating its role, Algebra 2 remains a required subject for college entry and should not be skipped.

  • 4th Year Math Options: For non-STEM majors, great 4th-year options include Data Science, Financial Algebra, AP Statistics, or Business Math.

  • Mandatory English: Students need 4 full years (8 semesters) of English.

  • College-Level Writing: In 12th grade, a rigorous writing class is mandatory; "CSU Expository Writing" is considered the best class to prepare for college-level work.

  • Lab Science: At a minimum, students need Life Science (Biology) and Physical Science (Chemistry).

  • STEM Recommendations: An additional general or lab science is highly recommended for any student considering a STEM major.

  • History & Social Science: Two full years (4 semesters) are required, though a third year is recommended.

  • Foreign Language: Two full years are required, but taking four years of the same language (like Spanish) is ideal if grades allow. Check out our language learning partner to get support.

  • Fine Arts & Electives: One full year of the "same art" is required, along with a recommendation of 6 semesters of electives to show academic depth.

Making 12th Grade Count

Your student's 12th-grade schedule is not the place to coast. It is the final opportunity to demonstrate academic rigor. Ensuring they complete the Algebra 2 sequence and prioritize expository writing over "creative" electives will make a massive difference in their college readiness.
