College is the place to prepare for the rest of your life. Though college life is a big transition to take on, you must prepare for your career while also focusing on your academics. Follow these simple steps on how to do that while in college.

  1. Take these FREE College Classes for Credit while in High School.

    Taking GE classes for college credit while in high school can save you money while in college AND free up your college schedule to make room for career exploration through internships, campus jobs, and more!

  2. Choose A College Based On Your Individual Needs.

    The college you choose to attend should match who you are as an individual more than any other factor. For example, if you excel in a smaller environments a smaller campus or private school may better suit your needs, in addition to the majors they offer and network.

  3. Utilize the Career Center to the fullest capacity.

    The career center is one of the most underutilized resources on campus and is there to help you gain career experience or explore different pathways. Use your career center to learn about careers you may not know exist, set-up informational interviews with people working in a field you’re interested in to understand what it’s REALLY like, or inquire about internships in your area to gain experience!

  4. Exploring Different Careers through informational interviews, job shadowing and internships.

    As mentioned above, it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you fully commit to a career path.

    Informational Interviews allow you to talk one-on-one with someone in a field to ask very important questions on what their day-to-day is really like, inside tips, and what you should do to get a job offer.

    Job Shadowing is the opportunity to follow along someone in their day to day to see what the inside of a job looks like, learn what it takes, and see if it’s something you’d love to do day in and day out.

    Internships are a commitment to working in and learning about a job by gaining real experience. It enables you to put everything you've learned into action and gain the skills needed to perform the job.
