CSU Bakersfield: An Underrated Gem for Student Success
CSU Bakersfield may not be the first name that comes to mind when considering California State Universities, but this smaller campus offers unique advantages that larger institutions often cannot match. Two experienced administrators recently shared insights about what makes this campus special for student success.
Personal Connections and Small Campus Benefits
One of CSUB's greatest strengths is its size. Unlike campuses with 40,000 students, Bakersfield allows students to develop genuine relationships with their instructors. Professors know students by name, which creates accountability but also provides crucial support, especially for STEM majors in computer science, engineering, and mathematics.
The campus offers quiet spaces for study and a sense of "oneness" that helps students feel connected rather than becoming just another student ID number. This intimate environment proves particularly valuable for students who need additional academic support.
Expanding STEM Programs
CSUB has significantly grown its STEM offerings over the past three decades. The campus now features:
Engineering programs with a dedicated engineering building
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Master's in Family Nurse Practitioner
Doctor of Nursing Practice
These additions respond directly to community needs and job market demands, positioning students for career success in growing fields.
Student Success Programs
CSUB takes student retention seriously through targeted support programs:
Sankofa Scholars Program: Designed for first-year African-American females, this program includes:
CSUB 1029 first-year seminar with African-American faculty
Spring ethnic studies courses
Mentoring from faculty, staff, alumni, and community members
Year-long cohort bonding and support
Excel Scholars Program: A male success initiative serving over 200 students with:
Average 3.8 GPA across six cohorts
65% STEM majors focus
Professional development including formal dining etiquette
Networking and post-graduation planning
"Barbershop talks" building brotherhood
Campus Leadership and Community
The university features a Black president and administrators who prioritize student voice in decision-making. Students participate in administrative meetings when decisions affect their future - an opportunity rarely available at larger institutions.
The campus also houses a Black Student Success Center, launched in February 2024, providing dedicated space where students can be authentically themselves while pursuing academic excellence.
Many families worry about Bakersfield's location and cultural environment. However, both administrators emphasized their positive experiences as natives of the area. The campus provides a welcoming, family-like atmosphere where students from urban areas can successfully transition to college life while maintaining cultural connections.
The partnership between West Angeles and CSUB has historically produced exceptional results, with the university reporting 100% success rate among students from this pipeline. Many graduates have gone on to leadership positions, including recent applicants to community college positions.
