Important Changes Coming to Federal Student Loans

With all the recent discussion about federal student loan policy, there's been significant confusion about what exactly is changing. Let's clear up the misconceptions and break down what students and families need to know about upcoming changes to student financing.

Contrary to some reports, federal Direct Student Loans are not being eliminated entirely. The major change is that subsidized loans, those that don't accumulate interest while you're in school, will end starting in Fall 2026.

This means that beginning Fall 2026, all student loans will start accumulating interest immediately, even while you're still attending college. Previously, subsidized loans allowed students to borrow without worrying about interest building up during their studies.
